Free vs. Premium Maps Files

Some Crimestar software programs utilize maps to represent information and data. There are two types of map files available for use with Crimestar applications; Free and Premium.    

The free maps files (the default) can simply be downloaded from the Crimestar web site without additional cost.  These free map files were created using the 2005 US Census Tiger Files and were specifically formatted and compiled by Pepperwhite Inc. for use with that specific vendor's mapping control (which has been incorporated into Crimestar software).  No updates for these files are currently available and none are anticipated in the future.

The premium map files (optional) can also be downloaded from the Crimestar web site and used for a free evaluation period of 15 days.  Since the free map files, described above, are the default setting you will need to modify the [MAPS] section of the Crimestar.ini file include the following entries:

MAPCONTROL=1
MAPPATH=c:\crimestar\maps

Once you activate the use of the premium map file data set for the first time you will receive a message dialog notifying you of the 15 day evaluation period.

These premium map files are provided by UnderTow Software for specific use with that specific vendor's MapPro80.ocx control (which has also been incorporated into Crimestar software).  These premium map files are derived from a proprietary data set under a distribution license from the TeleAtlas.  These files are generally a much more complete data set that has been enhanced with source data beyond the basic US Census Tiger files.  Since these TeleAtlas map files are also used in a variety of commercial consumer products, they are constantly being updated and revised.  However, unlike the free map files described above that we can provide without charge as part of Crimestar software, these premium map files are licensed for an additional fee on a per machine/computer (NOT by concurrent user) basis by Undertow Software and TeleAtlas.  If you wish to license these map files for use with Crimestar software products on one or more of your computers please contact Crimestar Corporation and we can assist you with the license process.
