Creating a Good Backup Strategy

Creating a backup strategy is the most important thing you can do when using any database system!

Computer system crashes, failed hard disk controllers, faulty network wires, software viruses and ransom-ware are just a few of the many things that can potentially corrupt your database and all your records. The application software can be easily replaced by obtaining a new copy from the software vendor, however your data records and all the hours of time spent capturing it can not be replaced by anyone else. It is up to you and your agency to protect your investment in your information and data. The most important thing about a backup strategy is that it must be performed routinely. The best backup plan in the world serves no purpose if it is not part of a daily routine that is performed without fail.

Your data files can be backup up several different ways. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. Our recommendation is that you backup your database regularly and that you physically remove the backup media from the computer and the building.   By removing the media that contains the backup from the computer you protect your data from hardware failures, viruses and Ransom-Ware attacks.  If possible you should even remove the media that contains your backups from the physical building where your system operates.  In the event of a fire your data will be protected.

Remember that all backup strategies simply backup files. If a file becomes corrupted and is not immediately noticed the corrupted data file is backed-up just like any other file. In these circumstances it may be necessary to restore one or more files from old backups that were performed prior to the file corruption occurring. This is only possible if multiple archive backups are maintained.  It is also important to understand that most backup systems do not backup files that are open or being accessed. This means that if someone is running CrimeStar, the database files are open, and may not be backed-up by tape or CD backup system.

Remember the most important thing about backups is to do them!
