Spell Checker

Crimestar has a built in customizable spell checker that is available throughout the program. In some of the modules, such as the Incident Module there is a spell check button that makes the presence of the spell checker more obvious. However, in virtually any text field you can access the spell checker by clicking the right mouse button and selecting "Spell Check" from the popup menu.

Once the spell checker is active, it will check the words contained in the field where it was activated. New words or common abbreviations used by your agency can be added to the dictionary. By default, dictionary files for the spell checker are installed on each respective computer or workstation where Crimestar is installed. Thus adding a word to the Dictionary on one computer will not automatically make that same word or reference available on all networked computers.

The spell check portion of Crimestar uses 3 dictionary files that are installed in the \Tables subfolder of the folder or directory where the Crimestar program is installed. These files are:

Words1.dbf

Words2.dbf

Words3.dbf

When the spell checker is run for the first time, an index file is created for each of the above .DBF files. These index files are Words1.cdx, Words2.cdx and Words3.cdx respectively. If any of these .DBF or .CDX files are missing or damages the spell check portion of the program may not function properly. If the spell check program runs but is not properly identifying suspect words, it may be because the Dictionary index files are bad. To fix this delete the Words1.cdx, Words2.cdx and Words3.cdx index files so that they will be rebuilt by the program.
