The NIBRS Aggravated Assault / Homicide Circumstances field is used to capture specific circumstances associated with certain crime types. This field(s) is required on when the NIBRS Victim Type code is "I" (Individual) and the Individual was a victim of one a crime classified with one of the following NIBRS classification codes.
13A = Aggravated Assault
09A = Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter
09B = Negligent Homicide
09C = Justifiable Homicide
The NIBRS Aggravated Assault / Homicide Circumstances codes used in CrimeStar are those referenced by the published FBI NIBRS specifications and are not modifiable by the user. Acceptable values for this field are as follows:
When victim of classification code 13A Aggravated Assault or
09A Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter (enter up to 2)
01 = Argument
02 = Assault on Law Enforcement Officer(s)
03 = Drug Dealing
04 = Gangland (Organized Crime Involvement)
05 = Juvenile Gang
06 = Lover’s Quarrel
07 = Mercy Killing
08 = Other Felony Involved
09 = Other Circumstances
10 = Unknown Circumstances
When victim of classification code 09B Neglect Manslaughter (enter only one)
30 = Child Playing With Weapon
31 = Gun-Cleaning Accident
32 = Hunting Accident
33 = Other Negligent Weapon Handling
34 = Other Negligent Killings
When victim of classification code 09C Neglect Manslaughter (enter only one)
20 = Criminal Killed by Private Citizen
21 = Criminal Killed by Police Officer
