Your CrimeStar Installation

The CrimeStar installation process creates and installs it's program files into a default directory named \CRIMESTAR unless a different directory is chosen during the installation process. Several sub-directories are also created which hold related files and code tables used by CrimeStar. These sub-directories are defined as follows;

\bin This subdirectory is used to hold additional program binary files and reference libraries.
\data This subdirectory holds a series of local tables which are used to store your Crimestar user data. If you are installing Crimestar to run on a network, then data tables in this directory may not be needed. (See Configuring Crimestar for a network environment)   *If you have installed as a Crimestar RMS Professional Workstation then the presumption is that the datbase files exist on a different computer/server, thus no \Data folder will (or should) exist.    *If you are running the Enterprise Edition of the software no \Data folder will exist.
\help This folder holds the main Crimestar Help file as well as other support and resource documents
\maps This subdirectory is used to keep CrimeStar reference map files. These map files represent the particular geographic area that was downloaded from our web site.
\sfq This subdirectory is used to hold the Crimestar RMS Report Creator data dictionary files.
\tables This sub-directory holds a series of local tables, which contain the spell checker dictionary and other referenced files.

* A note about CrimeStar mapping.

The CrimeStar mapping component uses an OCX control. In order for this control to work properly it must be able to find it's associated map files. For the FREE Maps, it does this by checking the path entries in the 'pwstreet.ini' initialization file, which is installed in your windows system directory. If you have installed the CrimeStar software or map files in a directory other than the default ( \crimestar ) you will need to modify the pwstreet.ini file so the OCX control will be able to find the map files. Simply modify the two path entries in the in file to reflect the path where the files were installed.  For the Premium Maps, all map path configuration settings are stored in the Crimestar.INI file.
